Villanova Ascends to #2 in AP Poll, Receives Four #1 Votes

To the Wildcat faithful-
I am pleased to announce that the Wildcats have, as of this afternoon, officially ascended to the #2 spot in the AP poll, for just the fifth time in school history.  They also received no fewer than four first-place votes, although it still put them well behind #1 Kansas, which received 54.  (Ironically, #3 Syracuse received six first-place votes, but Villanova scored more points from more ballots, so Villanova ended up #2, despite having two fewer first-place votes).

Go Wildcats!

You know, I'm quite happy that we're not ranked #1. Granted, it would be nice in an historical sense -- just to say we once were, but I'm not sure we're truly a #1 or even a #2 right now. Top four? Top five? Oh, sure. No argument there.

Can we be #1 or #2 at end of March madness? Yes, I believe we can, but we'll have to grow and develop. Jumping out to an 8-0 BE record is impressive, but the luster dims a little when you look at who we've played and who remains. The easy part of our BE schedule ends this week; the tougher BE slog lies ahead.

Syracuse is a team that we really need to worry about. We started off the season ranked in the top 5 or 6 nationally; Syracuse started off unranked, but they've proven to be a monster and against a schedule rougher than ours.

So, congrats to the 'Cats for making it to #2. From here on out we really have to prove we belong there.

Hello, Seamus-

Thanks for the comment. My thoughts:

I was surprised to learn that Villanova has never been ranked #1 in the nation, despite our illustrious history. I had assumed, naturally, that with the 1985 national title, we'd have ended up with the top spot, after the tournament. But this wasn't the case... They don't continue to poll, after the conference tournaments end.

Certainly, the second half of the Big East schedule is rougher, and it would have been better for us to have a fighting chance at #1, if we didn't have to go to Georgetown this week. But if we keep this up, I certainly think that we deserve that top spot, even for a week...

But, the first thing, is to win tonight...

Go Wildcats!
